Who is Caren Fog and why should I read her blog?  Well, to start with my last name rhymes with blog, but besides that.  We live in a world that constantly tells us we should be dissatisfied with the lives we have.  Our natural inclinations combined with incessant marketing is driving us further from the life that God has for us.  T.S. Eliot wrote in Choruses From “The Rock,”

The endless cycle of idea and action,

Endless invention, endless experiment,

Brings knowledge of motion, but not of stillness;

Knowledge of speech, but not of silence;

Knowledge of words, and ignorance of the

           Word.

All our knowledge brings us nearer to our igno-

            rance,

All our ignorance brings us nearer to death,

But nearness to death no nearer to GOD.

Where is the Life we have lost in living?

Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowl-

            edge?

Where is the knowledge we have lost in infor-

     mation?

The cycles of Heaven in twenty centuries

Brings us farther from GOD and nearer to the    

    Dust. 

When the church forgets the identity of Jesus Christ, when we forget our own identity found in and through him, the door is open for a multitude of problems.  We begin to believe the lie that our possessions define us, falling into materialism.  We believe that no one loves us or understands us the way we deserve, falling into depression, addictions, and divorce.  We believe that our nationality, race, or political party define us more than our baptism, dividing the church.  Having lost the fullness of who we are to be in Christ, we cling to fragments of the truth, denying the life of hope and love that God would gladly give us.   We, as a community, are the body of Christ—his hands, feet and eyes in this world; through the telling of his story we incorporate it and receive our own identification with him.  The Church is both the witness to the identity of Christ and his presence.
